Wellbeing in community: the psychology of shared experience

Wellbeing isn't only an individual practice. On the psychological impact of shared experience, co-presence and social connection in virtual communities.

Wellbeing is often thought of as an individual process: meditation, breathing exercises, personal awareness practices. But the human mind is shaped not only by individual experience — social bonds shape it too.

Sharing an experience with others in real time and being part of a community affects wellbeing more strongly than we often think.

Why does being together support wellbeing?

Solo practices are helpful, but sustainability isn't always easy. Motivation can drop, loneliness can grow, routines can be hard to build.

Shared experiences create a stronger sense of belonging, boost consistency, and build the feeling of "we're doing this, not just me." This is directly linked to the effect of social bonds on psychological wellbeing. The mind is balanced not only by internal processes but by interactions with others.

Experiencing together

When people join the same event at the same time in digital environments, a shared experience space forms. This is more than knowing others are there — it is sharing the same flow of time. Such simultaneity reduces the perception of loneliness and makes the experience more meaningful.

The sense of being together in a virtual space

When users are represented by avatars in 3D environments, a sense of "being together" arises without sharing a physical space. In psychology this is called co-presence.

Elements that strengthen this feeling include: being in the same virtual space, joining a synchronous event, communicating by voice or text, and focusing on a shared experience. Together, these make social connection feel stronger.

Sharing an experience with others also shifts the focus of attention. The mind moves out of individual thoughts and toward "the experience being shared right now." That makes the experience more balanced, more focused and more whole.

Join a live event on Lagomya today — a group meditation, a breathing session, or an interactive community activity.

During the event, focus not only on the content but on the fact that you're sharing the same experience with others at the same time. Being present with your avatar, being part of a synchronous experience, and sensing the presence of others naturally strengthens the feeling of togetherness. This small experience can reduce the sense of loneliness in daily life and create a more balanced sense of wellbeing.
